What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationAn addition from a trustworthy narrator (thiqah) is accepted, and Isrāʾīl is trustworthy (thiqah). So if Shuʿbah and al-Thawrī transmitted it as a mursal report, that does not harm the hadith.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3519

machine translationAmong the imams there are some who did not consider anything established on this subject except this hadith of Isrāʾīl.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3519
  • al-Bukhari

machine translationAl-Bayhaqī narrated this hadith in his Sunan through the aforementioned routes, then he reported from al-Bukhārī that he was asked about the hadith of Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Burdah, from his father, as a raised report (marfūʿ): "There is no marriage without a guardian." He said: An addition from a trustworthy narrator is accepted, and Isrāʾīl b. Yūnus is trustworthy. Even if Shuʿbah and al-Thawrī transmitted it as a mursal report, that does not harm the hadith.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3519
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationAl-Bayhaqī said: Al-Tirmidhī said in his ʿIlal: The hadith of Abū Burdah, from Abū Mūsā, is in my view, by God, more sound (aṣaḥḥ), even though Sufyān al-Thawrī and Shuʿbah do not mention "from Abū Mūsā" in it, because it is stated in the hadith of Shuʿbah that both of them heard it at one time, whereas those who narrated from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Burdah, from Abū Mūsā heard it at different times.

machine translationSo the soundness of this hadith through its routes has become clear from the words of these imams, and success is from God.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3519
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThe narration of those who narrated from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Burdah, from Abū Mūsā, from the Prophet ﷺ: "There is no marriage without a guardian" is in my view more sound (aṣaḥḥ), because they heard it from Abū Isḥāq at different times. Even though Shuʿbah and al-Thawrī were better memorizers and more reliable than all of those who narrated this hadith from Abū Isḥāq, the narration of those others is in my view more fitting and more sound, because Shuʿbah and al-Thawrī heard this hadith from Abū Isḥāq in a single session.
