✧ Upon him be peace, he recited, "not of those who have incurred anger, nor of those who are astray" [al-Fatihah:7], then he said "Amin" and prolonged his voice with it. Abd al-Rahman said: The most serious thing about it is that a man was asking Sufyan about this hadith, and I think Sufyan spoke part of it. Shu'bah contradicted him in its chain of transmission and its text.

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe hadith of Sufyān al-Thawrī from Salamah on this topic is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1269
  • Mubarakpūri

machine translationThere is no inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) in it; rather it is the preponderant report, in reply to the Ḥanafīs.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1269
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationHe declared his hadith authentic (ṣaḥḥaḥa).

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1269
  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe hadith of Sufyān is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah. Shuʿbah made mistakes in several places. He said "Ḥujr Abū al-ʿAnbas", but it is only Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas, whose kunyah is Abū al-Sakan. He added ʿAlqamah, but it is only Ḥujr from Abū Wāʾil. And he said "he lowered his voice with it", but it is only "he extended his voice with it".

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe hadith of Sufyān is more authentic, and Shuʿbah made mistakes in it in several places. He said "from Ḥujr Abū al-ʿAnbas", but it is only Abū al-Sakan. He added ʿAlqamah, yet ʿAlqamah is not in it. And he said "he lowered his voice with it", but it is only "he extended his voice with it".

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1269
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThe narration of Sufyān was given preference because two others corroborated him, unlike Shuʿbah. For that reason the critics were firm that his narration is more authentic.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1269
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationIn my view this is a mistake. It is only Ḥujr b. ʿAnbas, from Wāʾil. This comes from Ibn Abī Laylā, for he was poor in memorization (sayyiʾ al-ḥifẓ).

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1269
  • Dāraquṭnī

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1269
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationHe said: I heard Muḥammad say: The hadith of Sufyān is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah, and Shuʿbah made mistakes in it in several places. He said "from Ḥujr Abū al-ʿAnbas", but he is only Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas, whose kunyah is Abū al-Sakan. He added "from ʿAlqamah", yet ʿAlqamah is not in it; it is only Ḥujr b. ʿAnbas from Wāʾil. And he said "he lowered his voice with it", but it is only "he extended his voice with it". I asked Abū Zurʿah about this hadith and he said: The hadith of Sufyān is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah.
