حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شَبِيبٍ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الْعَنْبَرِيُّ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي ثنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْعَرْزَمِيُّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً كُنْتُ فِيهَا فَأَصَابَتْنَا ظُلْمَةٌ فَلَمْ تُعْرَفِ الْقِبْلَةُ فَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنَّا قَدْ عَرَفْنَا الْقِبْلَةَ هِيَ هَاهُنَا قِبَلَ الشِّمَالِ فَصَلُّوا وَخَطُّوا خَطًّا وَقَالَ بَعْضُنَا الْقِبْلَةُ هَاهُنَا قِبَلَ الْجَنُوبِ وَخَطُّوا خَطًّا فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحُوا وَطَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ أَصْبَحَتْ تِلْكَ الْخُطُوطُ لِغَيْرِ الْقِبْلَةِ فَلَمَّا قَفَلْنَا مِنْ سَفَرِنَا سَأَلْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَسَكَتَ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلِلَّهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ البقرة 115 أَيْ حَيْثُ كُنْتُمْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a detachment, and I was among them. Darkness came upon us and the qiblah could not be identified. One group among us said, "We know the qiblah; it is here, towards the north," so they prayed and drew a line. Another of us said, "The qiblah is here, towards the south," and they drew a line. When morning came and the sun rose, those lines were not towards the qiblah. When we returned from our journey, we asked the Prophet ﷺ about that, and he remained silent. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: {وَلِلَّهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ} (Al-Baqarah 115), meaning: wherever you may be.
