✧ I entered the mosque of Madinah seeking a companion of mine, and there was a man with gleaming front teeth, and beside him a dark-eyed, fair, handsome man, and they were in the shade of the mosque. The elder called me and said: “O Yemeni,” so I came, and he said: “Do not say: ‘By Allah, Allah will not admit you to Paradise,’ or ‘By Allah, Allah will not forgive you.’” I said: “Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?” He said: “Abu Hurayrah.” I said: “O Abu Hurayrah, by Allah, you have criticized something I used to say to my family and servants when I was angry with them.” He said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘There were two men among the Children of Israel who were brothers. One was diligent in worship and the other was a sinner. The diligent one kept saying to the sinner: “Refrain,” and the sinner said: “Leave me and my Lord.” Until one day he found him committing a grave sin, and said: “Refrain.” He said: “Leave me and my Lord. Were you sent as a watcher over me?” He said: “By Allah, Allah will not admit you to Paradise.” Then Allah sent an angel to them and took their souls. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to the sinner: “Enter Paradise by My mercy,” and said to the other: “Were you able to do what is in My hand? Could you withhold My mercy from My servant? Take him to the Fire.” Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He spoke a word that destroyed his worldly life and his hereafter.”’”
