✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ, along with Abu Bakr and ʿUmar and a number of the Prophet’s ﷺ companions. The Prophet ﷺ went out from among us, and we feared that he would be cut off from us. I was among the first to become alarmed. I came to the walled garden of a man from the Ansar and looked for a gap but could not find one. Then I saw a spring of water coming out from behind it, and it dug through the ground the way a fox does, so I entered. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Abu Hurayrah?” I said: “Yes, O Prophet of God.” He said to me: “What is the matter with you?” I said: “We lost you, and we became alarmed and feared you would be cut off from us, while the people were calming down, with Abu Bakr and ʿUmar among them.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Take these sandals of mine, and whomever you meet behind this wall who bears witness that there is no god but God with a heart certain of it, give him the glad tidings of Paradise.” He said: I met ʿUmar and said to him: “The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: ‘Go out with these sandals of mine, and whomever you meet behind the wall who bears witness that there is no god but God with a heart certain of it, give him the glad tidings of Paradise.’” ʿUmar struck me with a blow on my chest, and I fell on my backside. I returned to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what ʿUmar had done, while I was sobbing. He said: “What made you do what Abu Hurayrah said?” He said: “Abu Hurayrah spoke the truth.” He said: “I fear that people will rely on it.” He said: “So leave them to act.”
