✧ The exchange in pre-Islamic times was that a man would say to another man: 'Exchange wives with me, and I will exchange with you my wife. Give up your wife to me, and I will give up my wife to you.' Then God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: 'And do not exchange them for other wives, even if their beauty pleases you' (Quran 4:129). Then 'Uyaynah b. Hisn al-Fazari entered upon the Prophet ﷺ while 'A'ishah, may God have mercy on her, was with him; he entered without permission. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: 'Where is the asking of permission?' He said: 'O Messenger of God, I have not asked permission of any man from Mudar since I reached maturity.' Then he said: 'Who is this fair-skinned woman beside you?' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'This is 'A'ishah, the Mother of the Believers.' He said: 'Shall I give up for you the most beautiful of creation?' He said: 'O 'Uyaynah, God, Blessed and Exalted, has forbidden that.' When he left, 'A'ishah, may God have mercy on her, said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'A fool who is obeyed, and despite what you see, he is the chief of his people.'
