✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, he promised the Jews that he would give them half of the fruit on condition that they cultivate it, and then, 'I will let you remain as long as Allah lets you remain.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to send 'Abdullah b. Rawahah to estimate the crop, then give them the choice to take it or leave it. The Jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one such occasion and complained to him about his estimate. He summoned 'Abdullah b. Rawahah and mentioned to him what they had said. 'Abdullah said, 'It is as I have, O Messenger of Allah. If they wish, they may take it; if they leave it, we will take it.' The Jews were satisfied and said, 'By this, the heavens and the earth are upheld.' Then the Messenger of Allah said during the illness in which he died, 'Two religions shall not coexist in the Arabian Peninsula.' When that reached 'Umar, he sent to the Jews of Khaybar and said, 'The Messenger of Allah gave you ownership of these properties and stipulated for you that we would let you remain as long as Allah let you remain. Allah has now permitted your expulsion.' So 'Umar expelled every Jew and Christian from the land of the Hijaz, then divided it among the people of Madinah.
