✧ When we came to Madinah we found its climate disagreeable and we were afflicted with fever. The Prophet ﷺ was inquiring about Quraysh, and it reached him that they had encamped at Badr, which is a well. He sent two men, one of them al-Zubayr and the other Abu Ishaq thinks it was Ali. They came upon two men: a man from Quraysh and a freed slave of Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt. The Qurayshi escaped, and they brought the freed slave. They began questioning him and saying to him: How many are the people? Or how many are they? He said: By Allah, they are many in number and fierce in battle. Until they brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he questioned him, and he said that. He said: How many camels do the people slaughter each day? He said: Ten camels. He said: A camel for a hundred, so the people are a thousand. He said: A light rain fell upon us at night, so we dispersed under the trees and shields, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent his night supplicating and saying: O Allah, if You destroy this band, You will not be worshiped on earth. When dawn broke, he said: Prayer, O servants of Allah. We came out from under the trees and shields, and he urged or incited fighting and said: "It is as if I am looking at their slain." He said: When the people drew near, there was a man among them riding on a red camel. The Prophet ﷺ said to al-Zubayr: Call one of your companions and ask him: Who is the owner of the red camel? For if there is anyone among the people who commands you to good, it is he. Al-Zubayr asked: Who is the owner of the red camel? They said: Utbah b. Rabi'ah, and he was discouraging fighting, saying: O people, I see a people seeking death. By Allah, I do not think you will reach them until you are destroyed. He said: When what he said reached Abu Jahl, he came to him and said: Your lungs are filled with fear until you saw Muhammad and his companions. Utbah said to him: Do you reproach me, O you with a dyed anus? You will know which of us is more cowardly. Utbah dismounted from his camel, and his brother Shaybah and his son al-Walid followed him. They called for single combat, and some youths from the Ansar rushed to them. He said: Who are you? They told him, and he said: We have no need of you; we only wanted our cousins. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Arise, O Hamzah; arise, O Ali; arise, O Ubaydah b. al-Harith." He said: Hamzah went to Utbah, I went to Shaybah, and Ubaydah went to al-Walid. He said: Hamzah did not delay with his opponent until he finished him. He said: I did not delay with my opponent. He said: Two blows were exchanged between al-Walid and Ubaydah, and each of them killed his opponent. He said: Hamzah and I went to them, and we finished off al-Walid and carried away Ubaydah.
