machine translationʿAbd b. Ḥumayd narrated it from Yazīd b. Hārūn and from Ḥammād b. Masʿadah, both of them from Sulaymān al-Taymī, like the narration of Muʿtamir. If it is preserved (maḥfūẓ), then the hadith is with Qays from Abū Dharr and from ʿAlī together, as shown by the difference in their wording. Then one must look into the disagreement that occurred from Abū Mijlaz regarding whether the hadith of Abū Dharr is transmitted as mursal or connected (mawṣūl). Abū Hāshim connected it from him in the narration of al-Thawrī and Hushaym from him. As for Sulaymān al-Taymī, he made it stop at Qays (mawqūf), and as for Manṣūr, he made it stop at Abū Mijlaz. It is not hidden that the ruling goes to the one who connects it if he is a reliable memorizer (ḥāfiẓ). Sulaymān and Abū Hāshim are close in memorization, so the narration of the one who has an addition takes precedence. Al-Thawrī is a better memorizer than Manṣūr, so his narration takes precedence. Shuʿbah agreed with him from Abū Hāshim; al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it. Moreover, al-Ṭabarī transmitted it by another route from Jarīr from Manṣūr as connected. By this reasoning the objection of whoever claimed that it is inconsistent (muḍṭarib) is removed, as I indicated in the introduction.

machine translationThe hadith of Abū Hāshim is sound (ṣaḥīḥ), and the statement of Muʿtamir from his father is sound, and likewise the statement of Marwān b. Muʿāwiyah and whoever followed him. The hadith of ʿAwn b. Kahmas from Sulaymān al-Taymī is an error (wahm).
