✧ While I was passing the cup around to Abu Talhah, Abu ‘Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, Mu‘adh b. Jabal, Suhayl b. Bayda’, and Abu Dujanah until their heads began to sway, we heard a caller announcing: “Lo, wine has been forbidden.” No one entered upon us, no one left from us, but we poured out the drink, broke the jars, some of us performed ablution, some of us performed a full bath, and we applied some of Umm Sulaym’s perfume. Then we went out to the mosque, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was reciting: “O you who believe, wine, gambling, idolatrous altars, and divining arrows are nothing but filth from Satan’s work” until he reached “So will you desist?” A man said: “O Messenger of God, what is the status of one who dies while drinking it?” So God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: “There is no blame on those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they consumed” up to the end of the verse. A man said to Qatadah: “Did you hear it from Anas?” He said: “Yes.” And a man said to Anas: “Did you hear it from the Messenger of God ﷺ?” He said: “Yes—or” [he used a qualifier].
