حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَنَا دَيْلَمُ بْنُ غَزْوَانَ، نَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ:
بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَدْعُوهُ إِلَى اللهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى، فَقَالَ: أَيْشِ رَبُّكَ الَّذِي تَدْعُو إِلَيْهِ ؟ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ هُوَ ؟ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ هُوَ ؟ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ هُوَ ؟ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ هُوَ ؟ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ، فَأَعَادَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الثَّانِيَةَ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ، فَأَرْسَلَهُ إِلَيْهِ الثَّالِثَةَ، فَقَالَ: مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ، فَأَرْسَلَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ صَاعِقَةً فَأَحْرَقَتْهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى قَدْ أَرْسَلَ عَلَى صَاحِبِكَ صَاعِقَةً فَأَحْرَقَتْهُ، فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: وَيُرْسِلُ الصَّوَاعِقَ فَيُصِيبُ بِهَا مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَهُمْ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي اللهِ وَهُوَ شَدِيدُ الْمِحَالِ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man from his companions to a man among the notables of the pre-Islamic era to call him to Allah, Blessed and Exalted. He said: What is your Lord to whom you call? Is He of copper? Is He of iron? Is He of silver? Is He of gold? The man came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. The Prophet ﷺ sent him a second time, and he said the like of that. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. He sent him a third time, and he said the like of that. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent upon him a thunderbolt and burned him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has sent upon your companion a thunderbolt and burned him. Then this verse was revealed: “And He sends thunderbolts and strikes with them whom He wills, while they dispute about Allah. And He is severe in assault.”
