✧ The Jews used to keep away from women during menstruation: they would not eat with them, nor drink with them, and they would drive them out of the houses. Then the verse was revealed: 'And they ask you about menstruation. Say: It is harm, so keep away from women during menstruation' [Qur'an 2:222]. The Messenger of God ﷺ commanded us to eat with them and drink with them, and to do everything except intercourse. The Jews said, 'Muhammad does not want to leave anything of our affair except that he contradicts us in it.' So Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr and ʿAbbād b. Bishr came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of God, the Jews say such and such. Would you permit us to have intercourse with them?' The Messenger of God ﷺ became very angry at that, until we thought he was upset with the two of them because of it. So they left. Then some milk was gifted to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ sent after them, and they came, and he gave them to drink from that milk. Thus we knew that he was not upset with them.
