وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِي بِخَطِّي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْمُقَدَّمِيِّ، نَا يَسَارُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ;

✧ That ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, may God have mercy on him, came to Abū Bakr, may God have mercy on him, and said: O Abū Bakr, what prevents you from marrying Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: He will not marry me to her. He said: If he does not marry you to her, then who will he marry? For you are among the most honored of people to him and the earliest of them in Islam. He said: So Abū Bakr, may God have mercy on him, went to ʿĀʾishah ؓ and said: O ʿĀʾishah, when you see from the Messenger of God ﷺ good spirits and attention toward you, mention to him that I have mentioned Fāṭimah, perhaps God will make her easy for me. He said: So the Messenger of God ﷺ came, and she saw from him good spirits and attention, and she said: O Messenger of God, Abū Bakr mentioned Fāṭimah and ordered me to mention her to you. He said: Until the decree descends. He said: So Abū Bakr returned to her, and she said: O my father, I wish I had not mentioned to him what you mentioned. Then Abū Bakr met ʿUmar, and Abū Bakr told ʿUmar what ʿĀʾishah had informed him. So ʿUmar went to Ḥafṣah and said: O Ḥafṣah, when you see from the Messenger of God ﷺ attention, meaning toward you, mention me to him and mention Fāṭimah to him, perhaps God will make her easy for me. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ met Ḥafṣah, and she saw his good spirits and saw from him attention, so she mentioned Fāṭimah ؓ to him. He said: Until the decree descends. Then ʿUmar met Ḥafṣah, and she said: O my father, I wish I had not mentioned anything to him. So ʿUmar went to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and said: What prevents you from marrying Fāṭimah? He said: I fear that he will not marry me to her. He said: If he does not marry you to her, then who will he marry? For you are the nearest of God's creation to him. So ʿAlī went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he had no one like ʿĀʾishah or like Ḥafṣah. He said: So he met the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: I want to marry Fāṭimah. He said: Then do so. He said: I have nothing but my armor. He said: Gather what you can and bring it to me. He said: So he brought him twelve ūqiyyahs — four hundred and eighty — and brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ, who married him to Fāṭimah. He took three handfuls and gave them to Umm Ayman, saying: Set aside one handful for perfume — I think he said — and the rest for what a woman needs from household goods. When she finished the trousseau and brought them into a house, he said: O ʿAlī, do not approach your wife until I come to you. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came to them, and there was Fāṭimah veiled, ʿAlī sitting, and Umm Ayman in the house. He said: O Umm Ayman, bring me a bowl of water. She brought him a cup containing water. He drank from it, then rinsed his mouth into it, then handed it to Fāṭimah, and she drank from it. He took some of it and sprinkled it on her forehead, between her shoulders, and her chest. Then he gave it to ʿAlī and said: O ʿAlī, drink. Then he took some of it and sprinkled it on his forehead and between his shoulders. Then he said: O people of my house, remove from them the impurity and purify them thoroughly. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ and Umm Ayman left, and he said: O ʿAlī, your wife.
