حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ قَزَعَةَ، قَالَ: نَا بُهْلُولُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، قَالَ:
كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ يَمْشِيَانِ أَمَامَ الْجِنَازَةِ، وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ يَمْشِي خَلْفَهَا، فَقِيلَ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ فِي ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُمَا لَيَعْلَمَانِ كَمَا أَعْلَمُ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا أَحَبَّا أَنْ يُسَهِّلَا عَلَى النَّاسِ
Translation

✧ Abū Bakr and ʿUmar used to walk in front of the funeral procession, and ʿAlī ؓ used to walk behind it. ʿAlī ؓ was asked about that, and he said: They know as I know, but they preferred to make it easy for the people.
