✧ ʿAlqama b. ʿUlātha entered upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he called for a head [of an animal] and began eating with him. Bilāl came and called him to prayer, but he did not respond. He returned and stayed in the mosque as long as God willed, then came and said: Prayer, O Messenger of God. By God, morning has come. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: May God have mercy on Bilāl. Were it not for Bilāl, we would have hoped for a dispensation for us between now and sunrise. ʿAlī ؓ said: Were it not that Bilāl swore, the Messenger of God ﷺ would have eaten until Gabriel said to him, 'Lift your hand.'
