✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Abu Bakr was in a part of Madinah. He entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, placed his mouth on the Prophet's forehead, and began kissing him, saying: 'May my father and mother be your ransom. You were good alive and you are good dead.' When he came out, he passed by Umar, who was saying: 'By Allah, the Messenger of Allah has not died, and he will not die until he kills the hypocrites.' The hypocrites had rejoiced at the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and raised their heads. Abu Bakr passed by him and said: 'O man, calm down, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has indeed died. Did you not hear Allah say: "Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die" (Q 39:30), and "We have not granted immortality to any human before you; so if you die, will they live forever?" (Q 21:34).' Then he went to the pulpit, ascended it, praised and extolled Allah, and said: 'O people, if Muhammad was your god whom you worship, then your god has died. But if your god is Allah, who is in heaven, then your god is alive and does not die.' Then he recited: "Muhammad is not but a messenger; messengers have passed away before him" (Q 3:144) until he completed the verse. Then he descended. The believers rejoiced greatly at that, and the hypocrites were overcome with gloom. Abdullah b. Umar said: 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it was as if there had been coverings over our faces, and they were removed.'
