✧ A man came wearing travel clothes and sat before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, placing his hands on his knees. He said: 'What is Islam?' He said: 'To testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to perform the five prayers, to fast the month of Ramadan, to pay zakat, and to perform Hajj to the House.' He said: 'If I do that, then I am a Muslim.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'What is faith (iman)?' He said: 'To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, the Resurrection, the Reckoning, Paradise, Hell, and the divine decree.' He said: 'If I do that, then I am a believer.' He said: 'Yes.' The man said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'What is excellence (ihsan)?' He said: 'To worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He sees you.' He said: 'If I do that, then I am a person of excellence.' He said: 'Yes.' The man said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'When is the Hour?' He said: 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the one asked about it is no more knowledgeable than the questioner. But I will tell you of its signs: when you see the barefoot, naked—meaning the Arabs, I think he said—competing in constructing tall buildings.' He said: Then he left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Bring the man back to me.' We went out but did not see anyone. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This was Jibril, who came to teach you your religion. He has never come to me in this form before.'
