حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، نَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ فِرَاسٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو صَالِحٍ، عَنْ زَاذَانَ قَالَ:

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَدَعَا عَبْدًا لَهُ قَدْ أَغْضَبَهُ فَأَعْتَقَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَا لِي مِنْ أَجْرِهِ مَا يُسَاوِي هَذِهِ- أَوْ: قَدْرَ هَذِهِ - سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ ضَرَبَ عَبْدًا لَهُ حَدًّا، أَوْ لَطَمَهُ لَطْمَةً - شَكَّ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ - كَانَ كَفَّارَتُهُ عِتْقَهُ

Translation

✧ I was with Ibn Umar when he called a slave of his who had angered him, and he set him free. Then he said: “I have no reward from him equal to this – or the amount of this. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever strikes his slave a prescribed punishment or slaps him – Abd al-Rahman was uncertain – its expiation is to set him free.’”
