✧ I performed 'umrah in Rajab, and I reached al-Rabadhah at the time of the 'Asr prayer. They called the adhan and the iqamah, then they said: "O Abu Dharr, come forward and lead the people in prayer." He refused. Abu Dharr called a man, but he refused; he called the second and the third, but they refused, until the sun turned yellow or almost turned yellow. Then a man came forward and led them in prayer. When he finished, Abu Dharr turned his face towards them and spoke to them about some of their prayers. He said: "The Messenger of Allah led us in the last 'Isha' prayer. When he finished, he stood to pray after the 'atamah (darkness of night), and some people stood behind him. When he saw them praying behind him, he returned to his camel saddle. When he saw that they had left the standing place, he returned to them and stood to pray. I came and stood behind him, and he gestured to me to his right. Ibn Mas'ud came and stood behind me and behind him, and he gestured to him to his left, so he stood. Between us, each person recited and prayed on his own. The Prophet ﷺ recited one verse: 'If You punish them, they are Your servants' to the end of the verse, until he prayed the morning prayer with it: he bowed with it, prostrated with it, stood with it, supplicated with it, and sat with it. Abu Dharr gestured to 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud to ask him about what he did last night: he recited one verse, and Allah has taught you the entire Qur'an. If someone other than you did that, we would find fault with him. He said: 'I am not one to ask him about anything until he initiates it with me, so Abu Dharr asks him.' So Abu Dharr asked him, and he said: 'I supplicated for my Ummah.' He said: 'What was answered to you and what was rejected from you?' He said: 'What if they were to look upon it with a single look, many of them would abandon the prayer.' He said: 'Shall I go and give the people glad tidings of that?' So he went rebukingly, like a thrown stone. 'Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if you send this to the people, they will rely upon that and neglect worship.' He said: 'So he returned me, and I did not say anything.'"
