✧ Abdullah b. al-Samit, from Abu Dharr, from the Prophet ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَعْمَرٍ قَالَ: نَا عَفَّانُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: نَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ

أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ أَبِي ذَرٍّ فَخَرَجَ عَطَاؤُهُ وَمَعَهُ جَارِيَةٌ لَهُ تَقْضِي حَوَائِجَهُ فَفَضَلَ مِنْهَا قِطَعٌ فَأَمَرَهَا أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ فُلُوسًا فَقُلْتُ: لَوِ ادَّخَرْتَهُ لِلْحَاجَةِ تَنُوبُكَ أَوْ لِلضَّيْفِ يَنْزِلُ بِكَ قَالَ: إِنَّ خَلِيلِي عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّ أَيُّمَا ذَهَبٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ أُوكِيَ عَلَيْهِمَا أَوْ عَلَى أَحَدِهِمَا فَهُوَ جَمْرٌ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِمَا حَتَّى يُنْفِقَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ

✧ He was with Abu Dharr when his stipend came out, and with him was a slave-girl of his who took care of his needs. Some pieces of it were left over, so he ordered her to buy small coins with them. I said: If only you had saved it for a need that might befall you, or for a guest who might come to you. He said: My close friend ﷺ enjoined upon me that any gold or silver that is tied up in a bag—or one of them—is a burning coal upon its owner until he spends it in the way of God.
