machine translationWe do not know this hadith, with this wording, to be narrated by anyone except Shaddād b. Aws, and we do not know of any route for it other than this route which we have mentioned. A group of the people of knowledge narrated from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Bahrām and tolerated his hadith. As for Shahr b. Ḥawshab, Shuʿbah spoke about him, but we do not know anyone who abandoned narrating from him, and Shuʿbah narrated from a man, from him. The meaning of "Whoever prays to show off has associated a partner with God, and whoever fasts to show off has associated a partner with God" is this: he says that prayer is for God, so if he shows off with it to someone else, he has associated another with God in his deed which is for God. Likewise fasting is only for God, so if he shows off with it to a person, it is as if he made the deed for God and for the person; it does not mean associating a partner with God in the sense of disbelief.
