✧ "I was sitting with 'Umar when his companions asked him about trials (fitan). He said: 'Which of you heard it?' They said: 'We did.' He said: 'Perhaps you mean the trial of a man in his family, wealth, and children.' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'No, those are expiated by prayer, fasting, and charity. But which of you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speak about the trials that surge like the waves of the sea?' The people fell silent. I said: 'I did.' He said: 'You are—I think he said—bold.' I said: 'Trials are presented to the hearts. Any heart that rejects them will have a white mark made in it, and any heart that absorbs them or is made to absorb them will have a black mark made in it, until the heart becomes one of two hearts: a white heart like a smooth stone, unharmed by any trial as long as the heavens and the earth remain, and another black heart, murky, that neither recognizes good nor rejects evil except what it has absorbed of its own desire.' And I told him that between them and that is a closed door that is about to be broken. 'Umar said: 'If it were opened, it might be closed again.' I said: 'No, rather it will be broken.' And I told him that that door is the killing of a man or his death—a narration without errors."
