حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْجَهْمِ قَالَ: نَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي قَيْسٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ قَالَ:
كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ عُمَرَ فَأَتَاهُ رَاكِبٌ فَزَعَمَ أَنَّهُ رَأَى الْهِلَالَ هِلَالَ شَوَّالٍ وَحْدَهُ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَفْطِرُوا، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَتَى مَاءً فَتَوَضَّأَ مِنْهُ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى مُوقَيْنِ لَهُ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ فَقَامَ الرَّاكِبُ فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَاللهِ لَا أَسْأَلُ عَنْ هَذَا الَّذِي رَأَيْتُ غَيْرَكَ، قَالَ: نَعَمْ رَأَيْتُ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي يَفْعَلُهُ، وَخَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُهُ كَمَا رَأَيْتَنِي أَفْعَلُ

✧ I was sitting with Umar when a rider came to him and claimed that he had seen the crescent of Shawwal alone. Umar said: “O people, break your fast.” Then he stood, went to some water, performed wudu from it, and wiped over his leather socks. Then he stood and prayed Maghrib. The rider stood and said: “O Commander of the Believers, by Allah, I will not ask about what I saw except from you.” He said: “Yes, I saw one better than me do it, and the best of this Ummah. I saw Abu al-Qasim ﷺ do it just as you saw me do.”

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAlī said: I asked Abū Nuʿaym, "Did Ibn Abī Laylā hear from ʿUmar?" He said, "I do not know." Muḥammad b. ʿAlī said: I asked Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, "Did Ibn Abī Laylā hear from ʿUmar?" He did not confirm that. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, who is Ibn ʿĀmir al-Thaʿlabī, others are more reliable (athbat) than him, and the ḥadīth of Abū Wāʾil from ʿUmar is sounder (aṣaḥḥ) in its chain than his. It was narrated by al-Aʿmash and Manṣūr from Abū Wāʾil.
