✧ We were with 'Abdullah when a man entered upon us while 'Abdullah was lying down. He said: 'I have come to you from the mosque, and people met me at the gates of Kindah saying: the smoke, or the sign of the smoke will come and seize the breaths of the disbelievers, while the believer will be affected like a cold.' 'Abdullah became angry, sat up, and said: 'O people, whoever among you knows something, let him say what he knows, and whoever does not know, let him say: Allah knows best. For it is part of a person's knowledge, when asked about what he does not know, to say: Allah knows best. Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to His Prophet ﷺ: Say: I do not ask you for any reward for it, nor am I of the pretentious. The sign of the smoke has already passed. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw people turning away, he said: O Allah, seven years like the seven years of Yusuf. Then a year of famine seized the people and destroyed everything, until they began to eat carrion and hides. Abu Sufyan came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Muhammad, you have come commanding obedience to Allah and maintaining family ties, and your people have perished, so supplicate to Allah for them.' Then 'Abdullah recited this verse: 'So watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke' until he reached 'Indeed, you will return [to disbelief].' He said: Then it was lifted.
