✧ When we gathered for the emigration, I, 'Ayyash b. Abi Rabi'ah, and Hisham b. al-'Asi appointed a meeting at the water pool of Banu Ghifar above Sarif. We said: "Whichever of us does not arrive there by morning has been detained, so let his two companions proceed." Hisham b. al-'Asi was detained from us. When we arrived in Madinah, we stayed among Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf in Quba'. Abu Jahl b. Hisham and al-Harith b. Hisham went out to 'Ayyash b. Abi Rabi'ah, who was their paternal cousin and their maternal brother, until they reached us in Madinah. They spoke to him, saying: "Your mother has vowed not to touch her head with a comb until she sees you." He felt compassion for her. I said to him: "O 'Ayyash, by Allah, the people only want to turn you away from your religion, so beware of them. By Allah, if lice harmed your mother, she would comb her hair, and if the heat of Makkah became intense for her—I think he said—she would seek shade." He said: "I have wealth there, so I will take it." I said: "By Allah, you know that I am among the wealthiest of Quraysh, so you may have half of my wealth, and do not go with them." He said: He refused me except to go out with them. When he refused me, I said to him: "Since you have done what you have done, take this camel of mine, for it is a docile camel; stay on its back, and if you suspect any treachery from the people, escape on it." He went out with them on it until they were partway along the road. Abu Jahl b. Hisham said: "By Allah, I have found my camel slow; will you not carry me on this camel of yours?" He said: "Yes." So he made his camel kneel, and they made theirs kneel, so that he might move onto it. When they were all on the ground, they attacked him and bound him, then brought him into Makkah and tempted him, and he was tempted. We used to say: "By Allah, Allah will not accept from anyone who is tempted any ransom or justice, and the repentance of a people who knew Allah and then returned to disbelief because of a trial that befell them will not be accepted." They used to say that about themselves. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, Allah revealed about them, about our words to them, and their words about themselves: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" up to His saying: "while you do not perceive." 'Umar said: I wrote it on a sheet and sent it to Hisham b. al-'Asi. Hisham said: I kept reading it at Dhu Tuwa, ascending with it until I understood it. He said: It was cast into my mind that it was revealed only about us and about what we used to say about ourselves, and it is said about us. So I returned, mounted my camel, and joined the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah.
