✧ While the Messenger of God ﷺ was in the mosque and Abu Jahl b. Hisham, Shaybah and 'Utbah the two sons of Rabi'ah, 'Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt, and Umayyah b. Khalaf—Abu Ishaq said: and two other men whose names I do not remember—making seven, were in the Hijr, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was praying. When he prostrated and prolonged the prostration, Abu Jahl said: 'Which of you will go to the slaughtered camel of the Banu so-and-so and bring us its stomach contents and throw it on Muhammad ﷺ?' The most wretched of them, 'Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt, went and brought it and threw it on his shoulders while the Messenger of God ﷺ was prostrating. Ibn Mas'ud said: I was standing and could not speak; I had no clan to protect me, so I was afraid. Then I heard Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and she came and removed that from his shoulder, then turned to face Quraysh and reviled them, but they did not respond to her at all. The Messenger of God ﷺ raised his head as he would raise it at the completion of his prostration. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished his prayer, he said: 'O God, [I invoke] You against Quraysh'—three times—'against 'Utbah, 'Uqbah, Abu Jahl, and Shaybah.' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ left the mosque, and Abu al-Bakhtari met him. Abu al-Bakhtari had a whip which he carried as a support. When he saw the Prophet ﷺ, he noticed a change in his face and said: 'What is the matter with you?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Leave me alone.' He said: 'God knows I will not leave you until you tell me what has happened to you, for something has befallen you.' When the Prophet ﷺ realized that he would not leave him, he told him: 'Abu Jahl ordered and stomach contents were thrown on me.' Abu al-Bakhtari said: 'Come to the mosque.' So the Prophet ﷺ and Abu al-Bakhtari came and entered the mosque. Then Abu al-Bakhtari went to Abu Jahl and said: 'O Abu al-Hakam, are you the one who ordered that stomach contents be thrown on Muhammad?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: Then he raised the whip and struck his head with it. He said: The men rose up against each other. He said: Abu Jahl shouted: 'Woe to you! This is for him [Muhammad]. He only wanted to stir up enmity between us and save himself and his companions.'
