✧ When Hafsah became a widow after Khunays b. Hudhafah al-Sahmi, who was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and had been present with him at Badr and died in Madinah, 'Umar said: 'I met 'Uthman b. 'Affan and offered Hafsah to him, saying: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint 'Umar. He said: I will consider my situation. I waited for some nights, then he met me and said: I will not marry today. Then I met Abu Bakr and said to him: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint 'Umar. Abu Bakr remained silent and did not respond to me at all, and I was more upset with him than with 'Uthman. I waited for some nights, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her, and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said: Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered Hafsah to me and I did not respond to you. I said: Yes. He said: Nothing prevented me from responding to you about what you offered except that I already knew the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had mentioned Hafsah, and I would not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Had he left her, I would have accepted her.'
