✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the campaign of Hunayn. He wanted to relieve himself, and whenever he wanted that, he would go far away so that no one could see him. He said: “Look—do you see anything?” I looked and saw a single palm tree, and I told him. He said: “Look—do you see anything?” I looked and saw another palm tree far from its companion, and I told him. He said to me: “Tell them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to come together.” I told them that, and they came together. Then he came to them and screened himself with them, then stood up. When he had finished his need, each one of them went back to its place. Then the people were struck by severe thirst in that campaign. He said to Abdullah: “Seek for me”—meaning water. I brought him leftover water I had found in a water skin. He took it and poured it into a small vessel, then placed his hand in it and said “Bismillah.” The water began to flow from between his fingers, and the people drank and performed ablution as much as they wished. Abdullah said: I knew it was a blessing, so I began to drink from it and drink more, seeking its blessing. Then the Prophet ﷺ returned from the direction of Madinah, and a camel met him with tears in its eyes. He said: “Whose camel is this?” They said: “It belongs to Banu So-and-so.” He said: “It has sought refuge with me.” He said: They intended to slaughter it; they had worked it until it grew old and had sores on its back. He said: “Do not slaughter it; be kind to it. What an evil recompense you have given it.”
