I said to Ibn ʿAbbās: "I have a jar of sweet nabīdh and I drink it. When I drink a lot of it and sit with the people, and I stay long in the gathering, I fear that I will be disgraced." He said to me: "The delegation of ʿAbd al-Qays came, and he said: 'Welcome to the delegation, who are neither humiliated nor ashamed.' They said: 'O Messenger of God, between us and you are the disbelievers of Muḍar, and we cannot reach you except in a sacred month. So command us with something that we may act upon and call to it those who are behind us.' He said: 'I command you to have faith. Do you know what faith is? It is the testimony that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God, and that you establish the prayer, give the zakāh, fast Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the Sacred House.'" He said: "And I think he said: 'and that you give the fifth of the spoils of war. And I forbid you from drinking in the jar, the gourd, the pitch-coated vessel, and the hollowed palm-trunk.'"
