Mālik, Abū Anas, said to his wife Umm Sulaym, who is the mother of Anas: "I see that this man – meaning the Prophet ﷺ – forbids wine." Then he set out until he reached Syria and died there. Then Abū Ṭalḥah came and proposed to Umm Sulaym, and spoke to her about that. She said: "O Abū Ṭalḥah, a man like you is not turned away, but you are a disbelieving man, and I am a Muslim woman; it is not right for me to marry you." He said: "What is that about? Is it your dowry?" She said: "And what is my dowry?" He said: "Yellow and white" (gold and silver). She said: "I do not want yellow or white; I want Islam from you." He said: "Who will vouch for me in that?" She said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will vouch for you in that." So Abū Ṭalḥah set out, wanting the Prophet ﷺ, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting among his Companions. When he saw him he said: "Abū Ṭalḥah has come to you, with the radiance of Islam between his eyes." He came and informed the Prophet ﷺ of what Umm Sulaym had said, and he married her on that basis. Thābit said: "It has not reached us that any dowry was greater than it: she was pleased with Islam as a dowry, and he married her." She was a woman with beautiful eyes, and she was small in stature. She stayed with him until a little son was born to him, and Abū Ṭalḥah loved him intensely. Then the boy fell ill, and Abū Ṭalḥah was humbled and distressed by his illness. Abū Ṭalḥah went off to the Prophet ﷺ, and the boy died. Umm Sulaym ؓ said: "Let no one inform Abū Ṭalḥah of his son's death until I am the one who tells him." She prepared the boy and laid him down. Abū Ṭalḥah came from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he entered upon her and said: "How is my son?" She said: "O Abū Ṭalḥah, since he fell ill he has never been calmer than he is now." He said: "Praise be to Allah." She brought him his supper and he ate from it. Then she got up, perfumed herself and made herself attractive to him, and he was intimate with her. When she knew that he had eaten and been with her, she said: "O Abū Ṭalḥah, what do you think: if some people lent something on loan to other people, and then asked them for it back, would they have the right to refuse it?" He said: "No." She said: "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, lent you your son on loan, then took him back to Himself. So seek reward for your son and be patient." He became angry, then said: "You left me until I had done what I did, and then you told me of my son's death!" Then he went in the morning to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah bless you both in the remainder of your night." She conceived from that. Umm Sulaym ؓ used to travel with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, going out with him when he went out and entering with him when he entered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When Umm Sulaym gives birth, bring me the child." The labour pains seized her on the night they were near Madinah. She said: "O Allah, I used to enter when Your Prophet entered and go out when Your Prophet went out, and this matter has now come upon me." She gave birth to a boy – meaning when they reached Madinah. She said to her son Anas: "Take the child to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Anas took the child and went with him to the Prophet ﷺ, who was branding camels and sheep. When he looked at him he said to Anas: "Has the daughter of Milḥān given birth?" He said: "Yes." He dropped what was in his hand and took the child and said: "Bring me some ʿajwah dates." The Prophet ﷺ took the dates and began to chew them and rub them on the child's palate, and the child began to smack his lips. He said: "See how the Anṣār love dates." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rubbed his palate and named him ʿAbdullāh,
