(Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us, al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad al-Rāfiqī informed me, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad narrated to us, Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us by recitation, Sufyān narrated to us from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Qārī, and he mentioned the hadith like the narration of al-Madāʾinī. Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā said: al-Shāfiʿī, may God have mercy on him, said to me about this hadith: Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah followed al-Zuhrī in his saying, from ʿUrwah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, al-Majarrah, meaning keeping to the road. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad said: That is because Mālik, Yūnus and others narrated the hadith from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qārī, from ʿUmar. So al-Shāfiʿī meant that Sufyān made an error, and that the sound version is what Mālik narrated.)
