I had an hour in the last part of the night in which I would enter upon the Prophet ﷺ. If he was praying, he would say "Subḥān Allāh", and that was his permission for me during the prayer; and if he was not praying, he would give me permission.

- Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
فهو حديث مختلف في إسناده ومتنه فقيل سبح وقيل تنحنح ومداره على عبد الله بن نجي الحضرمي قال البخاري فيه نظر وضعفه غيره وفيما مضى كفاية عن روايته
machine translationThis is a hadith disputed in its chain of transmission (isnād) and its text (matn): it is said that he said "Subḥān Allāh", and it is said that he cleared his throat. Its transmission revolves around ʿAbdullāh b. Nujayy al-Ḥaḍramī, about whom al-Bukhārī said, "There is something to examine in him (fīhi naẓar)", and others declared him weak (ḍaʿīf). What has preceded is sufficient regarding his narration.

machine translationThis is disputed in its chain and its text: it is said that he said "Subḥān Allāh", and it is said that he cleared his throat. He said: its basis rests on ʿAbdullāh b. Nujayy. I say: there is disagreement about him; it is said that he narrated from ʿAlī, and it is said that he narrated from his father, from ʿAlī.
in سنن البيهقي الكبرى, p. 3390 - Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn
لم يسمعه عبد الله من علي بينه وبين علي أبوه
