I read in some books that Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah asked al-Aḥnaf b. Qays about manliness (murūʾah). Al-Aḥnaf said: "Manliness is piety and forbearance." Then al-Aḥnaf bowed his head for a while and said: "If a handsome-faced man does not do what is good, what is his beauty? The best of a young man's character is only his piety and his forbearance." Yazīd said: "You have done well, Abū Baḥr; the sea has matched a Zīr." Al-Aḥnaf said: "Why did you not say: the meaning has matched its explanation?"
