A group of the Anṣār went out from Kufa to Medina, and came upon a clan of Banū Asad who had run out of provisions. They asked them to sell them food, though the clan's good livestock had returned to them in the evening. They said: "We have nothing to sell." Then they asked them for hospitality, and they said: "We cannot afford to host you." The dispute went on between them and the Bedouins until they fought one another, and the Bedouins left them the houses and what was in them. So they took one sheep for every ten of them. He said: They came to ʿUmar ؓ and mentioned that to him. He stood up, praised and extolled Allah, and said: "Had I acted on this earlier, I would have done such and such." Then he wrote to the people of the cities and the people of the dhimmah (protected non-Muslims) prescribing a night's provision for the guest.
