I came upon Abū Jahl as he lay fallen, wearing a helmet and with a fine sword beside him, while I had a poor sword. I began to strike his head with my sword, and I remembered a blow he used to strike on my head in Makkah, until his hand grew weak. So I took his sword. He raised his head and said: "Upon whom was the turn of fortune? Was it for us or against us? Are you not our little shepherd from Makkah?" He said: So I killed him. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "I have killed Abū Jahl." The Prophet ﷺ said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, you killed him?" He made me swear three times. Then he stood up with me and went to them, and he invoked against them.

machine translationAl-Aʿmash, Sharīk, Isrāʾīl, Abū Wakīʿ and Zuhayr narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbdullāh. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbdawayh, who is Yaḥyā b. ʿAbdillāh, the freedman of Banū Hāshim, narrated it from Abū Wakīʿ and said: from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAmr b. Maymūn, from Ibn Masʿūd. The version of Abū ʿUbaydah is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).
