A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Prophet of God, someone has come to me wanting to take my property by force. What should I do with him?" He said: "Adjure him by God." He said: "What if I adjure him and he refuses to desist?" He said: "Seek the help of the Muslims." He said: "O Prophet of God, what if there is no one among the Muslims whose help I can seek against him?" He said: "Appeal to the ruler." He said: "O Prophet of God, what if I have no ruler to appeal to against him?" He said: "Then fight him. If he kills you, you will be among the martyrs of the Hereafter, and if not, you will have protected your property."
