I was present with ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ when al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah was brought in, having drunk wine. Ḥumrān b. Abān and another man testified against him. ʿUthmān said to ʿAlī ؓ: "Carry out the prescribed punishment (ḥadd) on him." So ʿAlī ؓ ordered ʿAbdullāh b. Jaʿfar, the one with the two wings ؓ, to flog him. He began flogging him while ʿAlī ؓ counted, until he had flogged forty. Then ʿAlī said to him: "Stop. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ flogged forty, and Abū Bakr ؓ did too, and ʿUmar ؓ flogged eighty. Each is a sunnah, but this one is dearer to me."
