ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) praised God and extolled Him, then mentioned the Prophet of God ﷺ and Abū Bakr (may God be pleased with him), and then said: O people, I saw as if a rooster pecked me once or twice, and I do not see that except as the approach of my appointed time. Some people are telling me to appoint a successor, but God would not let His religion and His caliphate be lost, nor that with which He sent His Messenger ﷺ. So if my time comes suddenly, then the consultation is among these six with whom the Messenger of God ﷺ was pleased when he died. Whomever you pledge allegiance to, listen to him and obey. Some people will certainly criticize this; if they do, then those are the enemies of God, the disbelievers and the misguided. I fought them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. And I do not leave anything more important to me than the matter of the kalālah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was never harsher with me about anything than he was about it, until he poked me with his finger in my chest, or in my side, and then said: O ʿUmar, the verse of summer, which is at the end of Sūrat al-Nisāʾ, is sufficient for you. And if I live, I will issue a ruling about it that no one will disagree on, whether he has read the Qur'an or has not read the Qur'an. And I call God to witness over the governors of the regions, for I only sent them to teach people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, and to refer to us what is unclear to them. And you, O people, eat from two plants which I see only as foul. I used to see a man in the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ whose smell of them could be detected, so he would be taken by the hand and led out to al-Baqīʿ. Whoever eats them, let him kill their smell by cooking: garlic and onion. He said: He addressed them on Friday, and he died on Wednesday, with four nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah.
