A man came to ʿUmar ؓ and said: "I divorced my wife" – meaning with the final, irrevocable divorce (al-battah) – "while she was menstruating." He said: "You disobeyed your Lord and you have separated from your wife." The man said: "But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Ibn ʿUmar ؓ, when he separated from his wife, to take her back." ʿUmar ؓ said to him: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to take back his wife because of a divorce that remained for him, whereas nothing remains for you by which you could take back your wife."
