I said to Ibn ʿAbbās: "Two sisters are in my care; I support them and spend on them. Should I ask permission before entering upon them?" He said: "Yes." I pressed him again and said: "This is hard for me." He said: "Indeed Allah, the Exalted, says: {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِيَسْتَأْذِنْكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا الْحُلُمَ مِنْكُمْ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ صَلاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَحِينَ تَضَعُونَ ثِيَابَكُمْ مِنَ الظَّهِيرَةِ وَمِنْ بَعْدِ صَلاةِ الْعِشَاءِ ثَلاثُ عَوْرَاتٍ لَكُمْ} to the end of the verse." Ibn ʿAbbās said: "So He did not command these to ask permission except in these three times of privacy."
