That al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Khalīfah brought a canal of his from al-ʿUrayḍ, and wanted to make it pass through a land belonging to Muḥammad b. Maslamah, but Muḥammad refused. So al-Ḍaḥḥāk spoke about it to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ, and he summoned Muḥammad b. Maslamah and ordered him to let it go through. Muḥammad b. Maslamah said: "No." ʿUmar ؓ said: "Why do you withhold from your brother what benefits him, while it is also beneficial to you? You drink from it first and last, and it does not harm you." Muḥammad said: "No." ʿUmar ؓ said: "Why do you withhold it? By God, it will pass through, even if it be over your belly."
