A man sold a slave woman belonging to his father while his father was away. When the father returned, he refused to approve the sale, and she had already borne a child to the buyer. They brought their dispute to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He ruled that the man should have his slave woman back, and he ordered the buyer to take back what he had paid for her (to recover his price) from the seller. So the buyer held on to the seller, and the seller's father said: "Order him to let my son go." ʿUmar ؓ said to him: "And you, let go of his son."
