حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ قَالَ

كَانَ مَرْوَانُ يَسْتَخْلِفُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَيَضْرِبُ بِرِجْلِهِ وَيَقُولُ: خَلُّوا الطَّرِيقَ خَلُّوا الطَّرِيقَ قَدْ جَاءَ الْأَمِيرُ قَدْ جَاءَ الْأَمِيرُ، قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ: لَا يَنْظُرُ اللهُ إِلَى مَنْ جَرَّ إِزَارَهُ بَطَرًا

Translation

✧ Marwan used to appoint Abu Hurayrah as his deputy over Madinah, so he would strike with his foot and say: Clear the way, clear the way, the commander has come, the commander has come. Abu al-Qasim ﷺ said: Allah will not look at one who drags his lower garment out of pride.
