✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent ten men as a scouting party and appointed over them 'Asim b. Thabit b. Abi al-Aqlah [al-Ansari], the grandfather of 'Asim b. 'Umar b. al-Khattab. They set out until when they were at al-Hadah between 'Usfan and Makkah, they were mentioned to a tribe of Hudhayl called Banu Lihyan. So they sent out against them nearly a hundred archers. They followed their tracks until they found the date stones they had eaten at a place where they had camped. They said: These are date stones of Yathrib. So they followed their tracks. When 'Asim and his companions sensed them, they took refuge on a hill, and the people surrounded them. They said to them: Come down and give us your hands, and you have the covenant and pledge that we will not kill any of you. 'Asim b. Thabit, the leader of the group, said: As for me, by God, I will not come down under the protection of an unbeliever. O God, inform Your Prophet ﷺ about us. So they shot them with arrows and killed 'Asim along with seven others. Three men came down to them under the covenant and pledge, among them Khubayb al-Ansari, Zayd b. al-Dathinah, and another man. When they had them in their power, they untied the strings of their bows and bound them with them. The third man said: This is the first act of treachery. By God, I will not accompany you; I have an example in these, meaning the killed. So they dragged him and struggled with him, but he refused to accompany them, so they killed him. They went away with Khubayb and Zayd b. al-Dathinah until they sold them in Makkah after the Battle of Badr. Banu al-Harith b. 'Amir b. Nawfal b. 'Abd Manaf purchased Khubayb, for Khubayb was the one who had killed al-Harith b. 'Amir b. Nawfal on the day of Badr. Khubayb remained with them as a prisoner until they resolved to kill him. He borrowed a razor from one of the daughters of al-Harith to shave his pubic hair for the killing, and she lent it to him. A young son of hers crawled away while she was heedless until he came to him, and she found him having seated the boy on his thigh with the razor in his hand. She said: I was terrified with a terror that Khubayb recognized. He said: Do you think I would kill him? I would never do that. She said: By God, I have never seen a prisoner better than Khubayb. She said: By God, I found him one day eating a bunch of grapes in his hand, while he was fettered in iron, and there was no fruit in Makkah. She used to say: It was provision God provided for Khubayb. When they brought him out of the sanctuary to kill him in the open, Khubayb said to them: Let me pray two rak'ahs. They let him, and he prayed two rak'ahs, then said: By God, were it not that you would think that what is in me is fear of death, I would have added more. O God, count them one by one and kill them scattered, and leave none of them. I do not care, when I am killed as a Muslim, on which side for God my fall is, and that is in the essence of God, and if He wills, He will bless the limbs of a torn body. Then Abu Sirwa'ah 'Uqbah b. al-Harith rose to him and killed him. Khubayb was the one who established for every Muslim killed in captivity the prayer. God, Mighty and Majestic, answered 'Asim b. Thabit on the day he was struck, and the Messenger of God ﷺ informed his companions on the day they were struck of their news. Some people of Quraysh sent to 'Asim b. Thabit when they were told that he had been killed, to bring something of him by which he could be recognized, for he had killed one of their great men on the day of Badr. So God, Mighty and Majestic, sent upon 'Asim something like a cloud of hornets, and it protected him from their messengers, and they were unable to cut anything from him.
