✧ My father al-Harith was in charge of a matter of the affairs of Makkah during the time of Uthman. Uthman came to Makkah. Abdullah b. al-Harith said: I met Uthman with hospitality at Qudayd. The people of the water hunted partridges, and we cooked them with water and salt and made them a meat broth for the tharid. We served them to Uthman and his companions, but they refrained. Uthman said: It is game we did not hunt, and we did not command its hunting. A people who are not in a state of ihram hunted it and fed it to us, so what is the harm? Uthman said: Who can give an opinion on this? They said: Ali. So he sent for Ali, and he came. Abdullah b. al-Harith said: It is as if I am looking at Ali when he came, brushing leaves from his palms. Uthman said to him: It is game we did not hunt, and we did not command its hunting. A people who are not in a state of ihram hunted it and fed it to us, so what is the harm? He said: Ali became angry and said: I adjure by Allah a man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a leg of a wild donkey was brought to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We are people in a state of ihram, so feed it to those who are not in ihram. He said: Twelve men from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bore witness. Then Ali said: I adjure by Allah a man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when ostrich eggs were brought to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We are people in a state of ihram, feed them to those who are not in ihram. He said: Fewer than them, from among the twelve, bore witness. He said: Uthman turned his side away from the food and entered his camp, and the people of the water ate that food.
