✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Yemen. We came upon a people who had dug a pit for a lion. While they were thus jostling, a man fell in, and he clung to another, then another man clung to another, until four of them ended up in it, and the lion wounded them. A man took up a spear against it and killed it, but they all died of their wounds. The kin of the first went to the kin of the last, and they drew weapons to fight each other. Ali came to them at that juncture and said: Do you want to fight while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is alive? I will judge between you with a judgment; if you accept it, that is the judgment, and if not, let each of you hold back from the others until you go to the Prophet ﷺ, and he will be the one to judge between you. Whoever transgresses after that has no right. Collect from the tribes of those present at the pit a quarter of the blood money, a third of the blood money, half of the blood money, and the full blood money. The first gets a quarter because he perished above him, the second a third of the blood money, the third half of the blood money. They refused to accept, so they went to the Prophet ﷺ while he was at the Station of Ibrahim and told him the story. He said: I will judge between you, and he sat with his legs drawn up. A man from the people said: Ali judged among us, so they told him the story, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approved of it.

machine translationThis Ḥanash is Ibn al-Muʿtamir, and some say Ibn Rabīʿah. He was a Follower (tābiʿī); Simāk and al-Ḥakam b. ʿUtaybah narrated from him. al-Bukhārī said: "They speak about his ḥadīth," and he included this ḥadīth of his in his book of weak narrators (ḍuʿafāʾ). al-Nasāʾī said: "He is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī)." Ibn Ḥibbān said: "He is not to be used as evidence; he is alone in narrating from ʿAlī things that do not resemble the ḥadīth of the trustworthy." al-Bayhaqī said: "He is not to be used as evidence." Abū Ḥātim said: "He was a righteous servant, but I do not think they use his ḥadīth as evidence." Abū Dāwūd declared him trustworthy (thiqah). al-Bazzār said about this ḥadīth of his: "We know of him only narrating from ʿAlī, and we know of no route for it from ʿAlī except this route."
