✧ “Do I recite behind the imam?” He said: “The imam’s recitation suffices you.” I said: “The two rakʿahs of dawn, should I prolong the recitation in them?” He said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ used to pray the night prayer in pairs.” I said: “I only asked you about the two rakʿahs of dawn.” He said: “You are indeed thick! Do you not see that I am beginning the hadith: The Messenger of God ﷺ used to pray the night prayer in pairs, and when he feared the coming of dawn he would perform witr with one rakʿah, then place his head. If you wish say he slept, and if you wish say he did not sleep. Then he would rise to them with the call to prayer in his ears. So what prolongation could there be then?” I said: “A man bequeathed wealth for the cause of God; may it be spent on the ḥajj?” He said: “Indeed, if you did that it would be part of the cause of God.” He said: I said: “A man misses a rakʿah with the imam, and the imam says the salutation. Does he stand to make it up before the imam rises?” He said: “When the imam said the salutation, he would rise.” I said: “A man takes on a debt greater than his wealth.” He said: “Every treacherous one will have a banner on the Day of Resurrection at his backside according to the measure of his treachery.”
