✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb saw in the market a garment of heavy brocade and said: “O Prophet of God, if only you would buy this garment for the delegations.” He said: “Only the one who has no share” — or he said: “this” — “wears silk (I think he said: in the Hereafter).” He said: Then sometime later the Prophet ﷺ was brought a garment of it, and he sent it to ʿUmar, who disliked it. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Prophet of God, you sent this to me while you said about it what I heard: ‘Only the one who has no share’ — or he said: ‘this’ — ‘wears silk.’” He said: “I did not send it to you for you to wear it; rather I sent it to you so that you might obtain value from it.” Sālim said: Because of this hadith, Ibn ʿUmar used to dislike decorative borders on garments.
