✧ He said to Umar: I heard people saying something, so I resolved to tell you: They claim that you will not appoint a successor. He lowered his head for a while, then raised it and said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, preserves His religion. If I do not appoint a successor, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not appoint one; and if I do appoint one, Abu Bakr did appoint one. He said: By Allah, it was only when he mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr that I knew he would not equate anyone with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and that he would not appoint a successor.
