✧ I was the first to come to Umar when he was stabbed. He said, 'Preserve from me three things, for I fear that people may not reach me: As for me, I have not issued a ruling on kalala, and I have not appointed a successor over the people, and every slave of mine is free.' The people said to him, 'Appoint a successor.' He said, 'Whichever I do, one better than me has done it. If I leave the people's affair to them, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ left it. If I appoint a successor, one better than me appointed one: Abu Bakr.' I said to him, 'Rejoice in Paradise. You accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and prolonged your companionship with him, and you were given authority over the believers, so you were strong and you fulfilled the trust.' He said, 'As for your giving me glad tidings of Paradise, by Allah, if I had' — Affan said: 'No, by Allah, besides whom there is no deity, if I had' — 'the world and all it contains, I would ransom myself with it from the terror of what is before me before I learn the news. As for your words about the affair of the believers, by Allah, I wish that it were even, neither for me nor against me.
